Richard Johnson has spent his career on both sides of a line most people never cross once. For roughly sixteen years he worked in law enforcement — as a patrol officer, field training officer, sergeant, and watch commander. In parallel, and ever since, he has worked as a writer, editor, and SEO specialist for the firearms, defense, and outdoor industry.
Tac6 Media exists at the intersection of the two — and that intersection is very hard to hire for.
His law-enforcement career began in 1996 as a reserve deputy with the Fulton County Sheriff's Department in Georgia, and grew from there — a sworn officer and field training officer, then a sergeant and field training program commander in Kennesaw, then a lieutenant and uniform patrol watch commander in Marietta, and later an officer, FTO, and certified instructor with the Largo Police Department in Florida.
Those years ran on documentation. As a first-line supervisor, Richard reviewed fifteen to twenty-five incident reports a day — along with use-of-force reports, arrest and search warrants, and daily observation reports — quality-controlling writing in situations where accuracy was never optional. He rebuilt field training programs to nationally recognized standards, earned general-instructor certifications in both Georgia and Florida, and authored department policy ranging from domestic-violence investigation procedures to backup-firearm authorization. Along the way he was recognized with a life-saving commendation, a citywide Employee of the Month award, and prosecutor recognition for the quality of his DUI reports.
That combination — real operational knowledge paired with a career spent making complex, high-stakes situations clear on paper — turned out to be exactly what firearms and outdoor publishing needed.
Since 2020, Richard has served as Managing Editor of The Armory Life, Springfield Armory's official publication, where he manages a team of more than thirty writers, photographers, and videographers, and has grown organic search traffic by more than 40% year over year. Through Tac6 Media he provides writing, editing, and SEO to firearms, outdoor, and law-enforcement brands — and builds AI-assisted websites, tools, and workflows.
He is the author of two books, Surviving the Street and Best Backups: Guns of Last Resort, and has written for or contributed to outlets including The Firearm Blog, Shooting Illustrated, ITS Tactical, and Lucky Gunner.
Integrity in publishing isn't a slogan. It's the difference between content an audience trusts and content that quietly costs you their respect. The Tac6 Principle
